A category if liquor once reserved for an older crowd, brown liquor has become the go-to for many new consumers such as young men and women, mostly millennials, and new-wave spirits enthusiasts. Maybe it is the hipster within us, but even we – fruity cocktails lovers for life – are really feeling the straight whiskey these days. Because we would love for you to delve into the world of brown spirits with us and step away from those tiki-bar milkshake cocktails for a while, we recommend only premium brands suited for sipping straight: Diplomático Reserva Exclusiva, Bain’s Cape Mountain Whisky, Usquaebach Old Rare Superior Blend, Tariquet VSOP Bas-Armagnac and The Lepanto PX.
Tariquet VSOP Bas-Armagnac (SRP: $45.00). Matured for five to seven years, the VSOP is a fresh and well-rounded spirit. Containing both woody and fruity flavors, the taste of this amber-yellow liquor is enhanced by sweet vanilla and strong licorice overtones.
Usquaebach Old Rare Superior Blend (SRP: $115): The Usquaebach Old-Rare Superior Blend in a bright golden hue boasts potent crisp aromatics with hints of pepper, caramel and dark chocolate. It is a multi-layered whisky, offering concentrated flavors of pepper, coffee and sherry, with a long finish, intense, lingering and sweet to start before giving way to spice and malt. Apart from it delicious taste, one if its best features is he gorgeous porcelain flagon it is bottled in, which dates back to a time when whisky was bottled in ceramic, preceding the mass production of glass bottles.
The Lepanto PX (SRP: $68.99) is made from 100% Palomino grapes and is aged for a total of 15 years using the Solera system. The brandy is first aged in Tio Pepe Fino Sherry barrels for 12 years and then aged for 3 years in barrels that previously held Pedro Ximenez sherry. The additional aging and the Pedro Ximenez barrels give the brandy a dark amber color with mahogany tones. This haute brandy is sweet, smooth, and elegant with rich aromas of raisins and figs and tones of oak from the time spent in the barrel.
Bain’s Cape Mountain Whisky (SRP: $29.99) crafted from 100% South African Yellow Maize at the historic James Sedgwick Distillery, is a perfect drink for brown liquor first-timers. Double matured, first in specially selected first-fill bourbon casks for three years, and then transferred to a second set of casks for an additional 18 to 30 months, Bain’s whisky is warm and rich with smooth hints of vanilla, toffee, and banana. With the musky undertones of oak, it is a refined and pure spirit produced in the South Africa’s Cape Mountain.
Diplomático Reserva Exclusiva (SRP: $40): Aged for up to 12 years in a small oak casks, this delightful rum has sweet notes of maple syrup, orange peel, brown sugar and licorice. Elegant, strong and seductive, this brown spirit is so us.
