Are Superfoods Worth The Price?
In recent years every food and health junkie has been obsessing over superfoods – especially those with Brazilian origins, because of course – but because of this sudden fad, superfoods have become idolized and overpriced. Yes, us trendy Brooklyn youths will spend thirty dollars on a small bag of organic kale, but is it just a trend or do we really know the nutritional value behind these foods in relation to their cost? Do we do our research before planning out our diets or do we rely on the gossip we we hear in the aisles of Whole Foods?
The infographic below, put together by Darren Kingman, looks at different categories of superfoods and compares them in regards to their nutritional values as well as their price. We're certainly not telling you to stop shopping for these organic and magical goodies (I know I won't) but it's better to know what you're buying up front and why. Trends are fun, and yes we feel fabulously healthy after spending ninety dollars on a few cute veggies, but our diets should be about more than that, so let's just keep that in mind.
Did your heart break a little with the quinoa vs. brown rice stats? I know mine did. About the banana and H2O vs. coconut water, well I get it. Coconut water definitely went up in status after Rihanna did that one Vita Coco commercial and Jessica Alba posed for Zico. Little do hipsters know that we tropical beach gals have been drinking it for years, and not from a plastic bottle! Anyways, this isn't gonna stop us from going on our weekly organic fruit market run but at least now we know it all.
Bon appetit & stay healthy ladies!
