Life Lessons I Learned From Khloé Kardashian
It may seem odd or superficial to some, to read a book solely based on the idea of improving oneself and overcoming life’s struggles, written by a millionaire celebrity. We think: how would someone like Khloé Kardashian know about the struggles of life, when she has all one could possibly want, and the rest she can simply purchase? I admit I thought the same when first deciding to read her new book Strong Looks Better Naked; I was expecting to receive some sort of false message void of real meaning and lacking in substance, yet in the end, I was pleasantly surprised.
In our minds, celebrities are idolized in a way that is hard to describe. We mimic their styles, language, actions and lifestyles – or at least we try – yet at the same time we criticize them for sport, simply as a way to keep ourselves entertained throughout the day. We are all guilty of this, which is why it’s so hard for us to see them as people, just like you an me, going throughout their days like we all do… only with cameras flashing at every corner. The Kardashian sisters are no different, in fact, they may just be America’s biggest obsession today – hell, even President Obama made a joke about Kendall just last week! I know that I, along with most of my friends, follow their social media accounts religiously, and not even in an ironic way, I actually really enjoy seeing and reading about their lives. It’s strange really – or as my boyfriend would put it, “ridiculous” – but it’s a reality and a huge part of our society today and it’s not fair for us to be judged because of it, or for them to be judged for their fame. People always hate on the family for having “no talents” or because they achieved their fame through that really odd Kim Kardashian sex tape, but who really cares how they got there? They’ve sure worked their butts of to stay at the top. I know that if half of the haters out there had risen to fame from a sex scandal, they would be thrilled and would now be spending their millions not giving a damn about anyone else. To be honest, I probably would do the same. That’s what we don’t realize, it takes a lot of courage to have everything and still make the choice to give back.
There are a million things I could say in order to try explain why I think so highly of Khloé and her sisters, but there’s really no point, and people will think what they want. What I will tell you is what I – a super normal non-celebrity person – learned from reading Strong Looks Better Naked. I'm not going to lie to you and say that this book is a literary masterpiece, it's not, and as a writer there are many things that I would change; however, the message is strong and that is what I am choosing to focus on.
In her gorgeous memoir, Khloé reveals pretty much everything. She opens up about her life-long insecurities and difficult upbringing due to her father’s early death. She talks about her time as an alcoholic – a difficult topic for everyone – and how she fell into a bottomless pit of addiction for years with no control. She was depressed and lonely, and like many of us who have gone through difficult times like these, she tried to drown her pain with alcohol. Kourtney, her older sister was the one who finally got her out of her rut and up on her feet. She gave her a home, a job and a reason to wake up every morning. Reading about this particular struggle (and seeing photos that Khloé included of herself from that time) touched me in a very special way, not only because I identified immensely with what she was describing, but because it was extremely refreshing to read the truth, for once. It is difficult for anyone to talk about addiction and deep depression, but for a celebrity, who is constantly scrutinized, to open up willingly about a struggle so deep and personal, well, it certainly doesn’t happen often.
Of course, not everything I learned from the book was as intense and dark as this, there were some hilarious parts as well, and certainly some awkward family photos I still cannot get over. One of my favorite parts was when Khloé talked about her personal trainer and how exercise became one of the biggest joys in her life. While we’ve all heard that fitness is the perfect antidote to sadness, or in other words, the perfect path towards happiness, it’s so amazing to hear about it from someone who is truly passionate about the subject and has evidence to prove it! With a series of photographs and touching anecdotes about her journey, Khloé describes how she went from hating her thirty minutes of cardio a week to loving her two hours of intense exercise a day. It made her have purpose and brought positivity and drive into her character like she never expected. As she herself says, it’s not only about the exercise, it’s about learning to overcome the struggles and find what it is that brings you joy and makes you better. Coming from a person who clearly has made some pretty incredible achievements and become an idol to so many, this seems like advice we should all try to follow.
I also loved the fact that the KUWTK star shared some of her favorite family recipes and nutritional tips that she herself follows daily. Say what you will but the girl looks great these days, so I’m thinking yes to the health and diet advice.
After finishing this surprisingly inspiring read, I came to realize that it doesn’t matter how much fame or success or money one makes in a lifetime, in the end we are all still human – yes, even Kanye even though he firmly believe he is God. It’s just so hard to imagine that the life of someone who is constantly in the eye of the media (and even has a show broadcasting her every move) could actually be so secretive and so real! We may think we’ve been keeping up with the Kardashians, but we really have no idea. It’s all for show – yet the people behind the curtain, the real down-to-earth women we know nothing about, well, they deserve a standing ovation. Thank you Khloé, for waking me up from my celebrity-crazed dream and getting my butt back to reality.
