Quit Coffee? Bye Felicia! Here Are Some Reasons Not To

First of all, we all know the saying “everything in moderation” right? So really, detoxes are not ever truly necessary if we know how to limit ourselves and maintain a consistently healthy diet. Anyhow, I am amongst the many millions of coffee fanatics around the world that don’t believe in detoxes simply because the idea of giving up the highlight of our mornings is unthinkable; also the whole detox thing has become a bit redundant no?

I will be the first to admit that yes, it may actually be an addiction, but isn’t everyone addicted to something? For some it’s peanut M&Ms or Jello shots or deep fried Oreos or drugs! So really, I should be glad mine is just coffee. True it would be great to be addicted to something like exercise or volunteer work or reading… but I had no choice in the matter, so I plan on making the best of my current addiction and explain to you why you should do the same.

Save The Mood Swings For Your Period

If you’re a regular coffee drinker, a coffee cleanse (unless you absolutely have to quit for some medical reason) will do absolutely nothing to you other than make you act irrationally angry. I lied, it will also give you migraines. Why? The classic withdrawal symptoms of a regular addiction! I agree that this makes drinking coffee sound a bit unhealthy, and if I’m being truthful, I’ve thought of quitting once or twice myself, however, I didn't and that is because I realized that it wasn’t that I needed to stop my coffee consumption all together, it’s that I needed to slow down and maybe take a second look at my sleeping schedule instead. The peak of my addiction was in college, of course. I spent long nights working and sometimes didn’t sleep for days, so coffee was my water. This is very unhealthy, especially because it gave me a tolerance to caffeine that actually started to scare me. At times, drinking a cup of hot coffee actually made me sleepy! That’s when you know you’ve drank too much. That was an extreme situation, which I’m assuming is not your case, therefore I recommend that if anything, you simply slow down to about two cups a day, instead of stopping cold turkey just because you read it was a good idea. With two cups (three max) way you’ll stay awake, stable, productive but not over-caffeinated which is what can get a bit out of control. 

A Cup of Joe A Day Keeps the Heart Doctor Away

Due to coffee’s strong antioxidant characteristics, it is one of the best ways to maintain a low blood pressure, so even though it speeds up your heart rate immediately after you drink it, its long term effects actually do the opposite.Turns out, a cup of coffee provides more antioxidants than a serving of blueberries or apples, or strawberries, or really almost anything. Green tea has some great ones too but I’m just not feeling the craze. Sorry. Another great thing about coffee? It actually helps get rid of headaches. You heard right, and I don’t mean your post-detox caffeine withdrawal headaches, I mean random day-to-day ones too. Apparently, caffeine constricts blood vessels which can decrease pain, so like an Advil but way tastier. 

More Health Benefits, You Say?

Yes! The antioxidants in caffeine do a lot more than you think. Not only do they lower blood pressure over time, get rid of migraines and stall your body’s aging process, but they also boost your cells’ sensitivity to insulin, helping your body regulate blood sugar, AKA making you less prone to diabetes. Some studies also say that drinking a daily dose of coffee may reduce your risk of liver cancer, again due to those antioxidant chlorogenic and caffeic acids. It may even help in reducing your chances of getting dementia and Alzheimer’s, as well as Parkinson’s disease. So excuse me coffee haters, what were you saying about coffee being bad for us? Great thanks.

A Boost of Mental Energy

Obviously, this is the biggest reason why people become addicted to coffee in the first place: it gives you energy! In the morning, you may drink a cup just to make you feel awake, and during the day… well, to stay awake. It boosts your brain power and sharpens up your senses. While technically the boost caffeine supplies is purely stimulating to the brain and not the actual body, it still gives us the illusion that we are much more alert, which is essentially what we were looking for when we decided to drink the coffee anyhow, so works for us!
